Cemetery

Behind the green gate

The cemetery is perched up high, a few hundred metres south of the church on Christiansø. It is surrounded by stone walls and can be accessed through the green gate.

The cemetery is still in use for both urn and casket burials. The grave rest period is 30 years – 5 years longer than at many other cemeteries in Denmark. This is due to the dry climate.

In the cemetery, you will find memorial plaques for a number of commanders-in-chief throughout history, headstones from eliminated burial sites and both old and new burial plots.

The cemetery as a whole is managed by Christiansø Administration. The individual burial sites are tended to by the families themselves or by Christiansø Administration. The island gardener has the day-to-day responsibility.
